Polished Granite: The Classic High-Gloss Look
Polished is the finish most people picture when they think of granite. The surface is ground and buffed until it reaches a mirror-like sheen that reflects light and deepens the stone’s natural color. Because a polished surface has the least amount of exposed surface texture, it is also the most naturally resistant to water absorption, which makes it a practical choice as well as a striking one.
We install polished granite most often in kitchens where homeowners want the countertop to read as a bright, formal centerpiece. Veining and color variation show up more vividly under a polished finish than under any other texture, which is worth considering if you have fallen in love with a slab’s movement in our showroom.
Honed Granite: Soft, Matte, and Understated
A honed finish is created by running the stone through abrasive heads instead of polishing wheels, which levels the surface texture without buffing it to a shine. The result is a matte or satin look with little to no glare, and colors read slightly lighter and softer than they do polished.
Honed surfaces are a good fit for contemporary kitchens or rooms with a lot of natural light, where glare from a glossy countertop can be distracting. The tradeoff is that a honed surface shows fingerprints, oil, and water spots more readily than a leathered finish, since there is no texture to help disguise contact marks.
Leathered Granite: Texture That Hides Wear
Leathered granite starts as honed stone, then goes through an additional step where a diamond-tipped abrasive brush is run across the surface to create a subtle, dimpled texture. The finish has a soft sheen rather than a true polish, and it feels slightly pebbled rather than smooth to the touch.
Because of that texture, a leathered granite countertop tends to hide fingerprints and water spots better than a polished surface, while also bringing out more depth and dimension in the stone’s natural color than a flat honed finish. It is a popular choice for kitchen islands, statement countertops, and outdoor kitchen spaces where a slightly more rugged, handcrafted look fits the design.
Pro Tip: If you are torn between finishes, ask to see the same granite color in more than one finish side by side. The same slab can look noticeably different in tone and depth once it is honed or leathered instead of polished, and that difference is much easier to judge in person than in a photo.
