Three Bathrooms, Three Completely Different Jobs
The 2025 U.S. Houzz Bathroom Trends Study, drawn from 1,737 U.S. homeowners, put the national median bathroom renovation spend at $13,000, while major remodels landed at $22,000.
That spread is not random. A primary bath, a powder room, and a kids’ bath each put very different demands on the same square footage of stone.
Picking one material for all three is the easiest way to overspend in one room and underbuild in another.
Primary Bath: Build for Twenty Years of Daily Use
This is the surface you touch every morning. It sees standing water at the sink, heat from styling tools, and cosmetics that almost nobody wipes up right away.
Engineered quartz is the workhorse here. It is non-porous, so it never needs sealing, and it holds a consistent color across a long double-vanity run.
Granite and quartzite from our natural stone selection are strong choices when you want real movement and variation, and both handle heat better than engineered surfaces do.
Pro Tip: Any vanity top longer than about eight feet is going to have a seam. Tell us where you want it before we template. The joint disappears best between the two bowls rather than centered in the slab, and that call gets made at the shop, not on install day.
Powder Room: The One Place to Spend on Drama
A powder room vanity is usually under ten square feet and sees guests, not routines. Low use means you can pick a material you would think twice about anywhere else.
Marble, dramatic quartzite, and heavily veined slabs all make sense in this room. The etching risk that scares people off marble in a working kitchen is far smaller on a surface that mostly holds a soap dispenser.
Pro Tip: Ask about remnants. A powder room top often fits on a leftover piece from a larger kitchen job, which can put an expensive slab within reach. Remnants are one of a kind, so once that piece is gone, that exact stone is gone.
Pro Tip: The real enemy in a powder room is not water, it is the soap dispenser. Citrus and essential oil hand soaps seep at the base and etch a visible ring into polished marble within a year. A small tray under the dispenser solves it permanently.

Kids’ Bathroom: Plan for Products, Not Just Water
Kids’ baths fail for reasons nobody plans for. Toothpaste, hair dye, nail polish remover, and acne cleanser do more damage than splashing ever will.
Benzoyl peroxide, the active ingredient in most acne washes, bleaches light-colored engineered surfaces. That lightened spot is chemical damage rather than a defect, so it is rarely covered by a manufacturer.
Our recommendation is a mid-tone or patterned surface from the manufactured stone lineup, or a forgiving Granite. Both hide the small marks that come with a shared bathroom.
What Actually Drives Bathroom Countertop Cost
Material is only part of the number. Edge profile, sink cutouts, backsplash style, tear-out of the old top, and stair access to a second floor all move the price.
Small rooms also carry a minimum. Fabricating a 30-inch vanity top still takes a template visit, shop time, and an install crew, so the per-square-foot math looks different than it does on a kitchen.
Pro Tip: Template after the vanity cabinet is set and leveled, never before. Older homes around Richmond rarely have plumb walls, and templating against a cabinet that later shifts is how you end up with a visible gap at the backsplash.
